hwæl

Old EnglishEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Germanic *hwalaz (compare Old Saxon hwal, Old High German wal, Old Norse hvalr), probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kʷálos (sheatfish). Another theory suggests it is perhaps akin to Finnish kala, from Proto-Uralic *kala.
