From Japanese 神社(じんじゃ, jinja), from Middle Chinese 神社(ʒin-dʒjǽ) (compare Mandarin 神社(shénshè)), from Old Chinese 神社 (*Cə.lin-mtʰaʔ "sacrificial altar", "shrine"), from ("deity", "divine") + ("Earth deity [and altar]").
