EtymologyEdit

From Proto-Finnic *küllä. Cognates include Estonian küll, Ingrian kyllääst (enough, sufficiently), Karelian kyllä, Livonian ki’l, Veps külläine (content, fat) and Votic küll. Also related to Northern Sami galˈle. The adverb developed from the noun.

PronunciationEdit

  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: kyl‧lä

AdverbEdit

kyllä (not comparable)

  1. an intensifier corresponding to the English auxiliary do

Usage notesEdit

  • (interjection) Kyllä can be considered formal or stilted. When answering questions affirmatively, it's also possible to repeat the word – usually a verb – used for the question, commonly called an echo response.
Kävitkö eilen teatterissa?Kävin.
"Did you go to the theatre yesterday?" — "Yes."
  • Colloquially, words like joo and juu are used for affirmative answers.
