From Proto-Germanic *luþô (coarse woolen cloth), from Proto-Indo-European *(s)lūt-, *lūd- (weak, languid). Cognate with Old Frisian lotha (thick robe), Old Saxon lotho (thick wool robe), Old High German lodo, ludo (thick woolen cloth).
