From madrasah + aliah, from Arabic عَلِيَّة (ʕaliyya, “high”) + مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).

In Indonesia, sekolah menengah atas is used by school which is under supervision of Ministry of Education. Islamic school supervised by Ministry of Religious Affairs use madrasah aliyah.
