From Arabic بَاذِنْجَان ‎(bāḏinjān), from now archaic Persian بادنگان ‎(bâdengân), from Sanskrit भण्टाकी ‎(bhaṇṭākī, aubergine), reshaped under the influence of mela ‎(apple). Compare Modern Greek μελιτζάνα ‎(melitzána), Sicilian milinciana and Medieval Latin mēlongena.
