From Proto-Slavic *ogňь, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *ungnis, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁n̥gʷnis. Cognates include Lithuanian ugnis, Sanskrit अग्नि (agní) and Hittite 𒀀𒀝𒉌𒅖 (akniš, name of a deity), and Latin ignis (whence English ignition and igneous).
