From Old Iranian. Akin to Iranian borrowings Jewish Babylonian Aramaic [script needed] (parwanqa, guide), Classical Mandaic [script needed] (parwanqa, redeemer, savior), Arabic فُرَانِق (furāniq, courier's guide). Compare also Persian فرانه (farâne), فرانک (farânak).
