Etymology edit
From apretar (“squeeze, constrict, compress”). The semantic evolution to "dark" comes through the sense of "dense" or "thick".[1] Another common, but less likely, etymology suggested is Vulgar Latin *prettus, from Latin pressus. Compare Portuguese preto, Asturian prietu.
