From Proto-Germanic *rekwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁régʷos, whence Sanskrit रजस् (rájas, dimness, darkness), Ancient Greek Ἔρεβος (Érebos, Darkness). Compare Old Armenian երեկ (erek).
