From Proto-Germanic *rekwaz, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁régʷos, whence Sanskrit रजस् (rájas, “dimness, darkness”), Ancient Greek Ἔρεβος (Érebos, “Darkness”). Compare Old Armenian երեկ (erek).
