From Middle Dutch raetsel, from Old Dutch *rādisli, from Proto-Germanic *rēdisliją. Equivalent to raden +‎ -sel. Cognate to Old English rædelse (whence English riddle), Middle High German râtsal (whence German Rätsel).[1]
