EtymologyEdit

From Middle Dutch rouwe, ruwe, from Old Dutch *reuwa, from Proto-Germanic *hrewwōn, *hrewwō (pain, sadness, regret, repentance). Cognate with Old English hrēow, English rue, German Reue, Old Norse hryggr. More at rue. The noun rouw belongs to the verb rouwen.[1]
