From Proto-Germanic *sakō. Cognate with Old Frisian sake, seke, sek (West Frisian saak), Old Saxon saka (Low German sake), Dutch zaak, Old High German sahha (German Sache), Old Norse sǫk (Danish sag, Icelandic sök, Swedish sak), Gothic 𐍃𐌰𐌺𐌾𐍉 (sakjō, dispute).
