- roan horse (horse with coat characterized by an even mixture of colored and white hairs on the body)
- zem salņa kājām sniegi / kā spilves pukojas ― under the roan's feet (= hooves) the snow / grumbles like cotton grass
- jātnieks zirgu noglauda: “salni, mans salni, ko krākdams tu kārpies...” ― the rider stroked the horse: “roan, my roan, how noisily you paw...”
