Early 19th century. Compound of sidderen (to tremble) +‎ aal (eel), after siddervisch (“electric ray, torpedo”, 18th c., now distinguished as sidderrog). Both terms may be calques from German Zitterfisch (16th c.), Zitteraal (18th c.).
