Etymology edit

From soarte (now considered archaic), from Latin sortem, accusative of sors (fate), from Proto-Italic *sortis, from Proto-Indo-European *ser- (to bind). An alternative theory derives it from Latin exorta, from exortus (appeared), but is less likely.[1]
