From Old Portuguese soombra, of uncertain origin, but ultimately containing Latin umbra (shadow). Possible etymologies include:

Cognate with Galician sombra, Asturian sombra, solombra, Mirandese selombra, Spanish sombra, French sombre and possibly with Dalmatian sombreja and Romansch sumbreiva.
