Borrowed from New Latin sternocleidomastoīdēs, from Latin sternum (the breastbone) +‎ Ancient Greek κλείς (kleís, the collarbone) +‎ Latin mastoīdēs (like a breast), equivalent to sterno- +‎ cleido- +‎ mastoid.
