Old Tupi

Etymology

edit

From sumarã, possibly reanalyzed as a compound of marã, which has marana as a variant, hence it may be a case of hypercorrection. The word sumarã appears to have no cognates in other languages of the same family, so its etymology is attributed to Kariri, in which it is also attested and can be better analyzed.
