Etymology edit

Sino-Vietnamese word from 自由, from Japanese 自由 (jiyū), from Middle Chinese 自由 (d͡ziɪ^H jɨu, “self-determined; self-pleased”).

As pointed out in Iwatsuki (2013),^[1] during the late 19th and very early 20th century, the French word liberté was translated using expressions such as (sự) thong dong or thong thả, with tự do being adopted a bit later.
