Borrowed from Spanish honras (honors), earlier spelled as honrras, or variant ondras, plural of honra (honor; respect), corrupted by /d/~/r/ allophony. In Spanish pronunciation, ⟨h⟩ is silent. Ultimately from Latin honōrāre. Compare honras fúnebres (funeral honors).
