MalteseEdit

EtymologyEdit

From Sicilian ciumi (“river”, plural ciùmira), or rather a related southern Italian form (ciumara, sciumara).[1] Ultimately from Latin flūmen. Though Maltese has of course replaced many, even everyday words with Romance borrowings, in this case it must be considered that there are no rivers nor permanent brooks in Malta.

PronunciationEdit

NounEdit

xmara f (plural xmajjar)

  1. river
