ystävä
Finnish edit
Etymology edit
From Proto-Finnic *üstävä, further origin unknown, but cognate with Livvi ystävy and Ingrian ystävä. Theories include a reduction of the present passive participle of *üskätä (“to embrace”, such verb is not attested), present active participle of *üstää (“to want”) (also unattested, < Germanic *wunskijaną; per Koivulehto),[1] or a front vowel variant of *ustava (compare Estonian ustav (“loyal, faithful”)), a present passive participle of the consonant stem *usk- related to usko (per Saarikivi).[2]
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
ystävä
- (close) friend
Usage notes edit
ystävä is used for intimate, longterm friends and is in contrast with kaveri (“friend, pal”).
