From Proto-Indo-Iranian *gā́wš (cattle), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷṓws (cattle). Cognate with Avestan 𐬔𐬀𐬊 (gao), Ancient Greek βοῦς (boûs), Latin bōs, Old English (whence English cow).
