Etymology edit
γλωσσο- (glosso-, “tongue, language”) + -λογία (-logía, “-logy”), a calque of French linguistique. Different meaning for the mediaeval or Hellenistic γλωσσολογία (glōssología, “jabber, idle talk”). [1]
