Borrowed from Ottoman Turkish بلا (belâ),[1] from Arabic بَلَاء (balāʔ, “misfortune, calamity”);[2] Compare Greek μπελιάς (beliás), Serbo-Croatian бѐла̄ј/bèlāj, Romanian belea, Albanian belja, Gagauz bela.
