Etymology edit

A Paleo-Balkan wanderwort akin to Byzantine Greek γούνα (goúna, coarse garment), Albanian gunë (goatskin coat), Latin gunna (leather garment). Possibly stemming back from Proto-Slavic *guna*guňa*guňь, an early Scythian borrowing ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *gawnám (fur).
