Inherited from Proto-Slavic *žiti (compare Belarusian жыць (žycʹ), Ukrainian жи́ти (žýty), Old Church Slavonic жити (žiti)), from Proto-Indo-European *gʷeih₃w- (to live). Cognate to Lithuanian gyventi, Sanskrit जीवति (jīvati, lives), Latin vīvō, and English quick.
