Etymology

From Old East Slavic пьрстатица (pĭrstatica), ultimately from Proto-Slavic *pьrstъ (“finger”). Related to перст (perst, “finger”). The sense of fifty-five in lotto comes from the two verses Вме́сто ва́ленок перча́тки / Натя́нул себе́ на пя́тки. (Vmésto válenok perčátki / Natjánul sebé na pjátki.) in the poem and 1975 film Вот какой рассе́янный, connecting пя́тка (pjátka) to пять (pjatʹ).
