From эш (eş, “work”) + -се (-se, affix forming an agent noun).
Cognate with Kumyk ишчи (işçi), Shor ишчи, Kyrgyz ишчи (işci), Southern Altai ишчи (išči), Uzbek ishchi, Azerbaijani işçi, Turkish işçi (“worker”).
