A Mishnaic borrowing from Ancient Greek ζεῦγος (zeûgos, pair), in turn derived from Proto-Indo-European *yewg- (to join). Analogous Semitic borrowings of the same term include Arabic زَوْج (zawj, spouse), زَوَّجَ (zawwaja, to join) and Aramaic זוֹגָא (zōḡā, pair, spouse), זַוֵּג (zawwēḡ, to join).
