From Middle High German sich, from Old High German sih. Cognate to German sich.
The generalization to all persons and numbers was most likely influenced by Slavic languages; compare Polish siebie, Russian себя (sebja), Ukrainian себе (sebe), Bulgarian себе (sebe).
