Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑀸𑀳𑀸𑀟 (*pāhāḍa, “mountain”). Cognate with Nepali पहाड (pahāḍ), Punjabi ਪਹਾੜ (pahāṛ), Gujarati પહાડ (pahāḍ), Bengali পাহাড় (pahaṛ), Assamese পাহাৰ (pahar), Sylheti ꠙꠣꠀꠠ (faaṛ).
