Etymology

Inherited from Old Hindi मेरौ (merau), मेरा (merā), from Sauraseni Apabhramsa महेरौ (maherau), महारा (mahārā).

• The first part of this is from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀳 (maha, genitive singular), from Sanskrit मह्यम् (mahyam, dative of अहम् (aham)), and further from Proto-Indo-Iranian *máȷ́ʰyam, a formation from Proto-Indo-European *me-.
• The second part of this is from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀓𑁂𑀭 (kera) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) (Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀫𑀫𑀓𑁂𑀭 (mamakera, “my”) is attested). See there for more.

Cognate with Assamese মোৰ (mür), Gujarati મારું (mārũ), Punjabi ਮੇਰਾ (merā) and Romani miro.
