Inherited from Old Hindi मेरौ (merau), मेरा (merā), from Sauraseni Apabhramsa महेरौ (maherau), महारा (mahārā).[1]

Cognate with Assamese মোৰ (mür), Gujarati મારું (mārũ), Punjabi ਮੇਰਾ (merā) and Romani miro.
