From Proto-Tai *ɟeːᴮ (“to soak”), from Middle Chinese 漬 (MC dzjeH, “to soak; soaked”). Cognate with Thai แช่ (chɛ̂ɛ), Lao ແຊ່ (sǣ), Shan ၸႄႈ (tsāae), Ahom 𑜋𑜦𑜧 (chē).
