Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yunt (horse, mare). Cognate to Karakhanid يُنْدْ (yund, horse), Chagatai یونت (yunt, horse), Old Anatolian Turkish یونت (yont, mare), dialectal Turkish yont (stray animal).
