German edit
Etymology edit
Deverbal from drehen, after Low German Dreih m (compare Dutch draai). Chiefly since the 19th century, earlier attestations are isolated. Widely displaced the earlier feminine Drehe. The sense “trick” is from Rotwelsch (thieves’ cant).
Pronunciation edit
Noun edit
Dreh m (strong, genitive Drehs or Drehes, plural Drehs or Drehe)
- nomen vicis of drehen: a turn, spin, twist, a single rotation
- Synonym: Drehung (nomen actionis, thus also collectively for several rotations)
- (film) shooting, filming
- (informal) knack, trick
Declension edit
Declension of Dreh [masculine, strong]
