From Old English hlÿde + dæl, valley of the River Lid (loud one).
Proper noun edit
- A river in the Scottish Borders council area and Dumfries and Galloway council area, Scotland.
- The same river in Cumbria, England.
Usage notes edit
This river joins the River Esk (from Dumfries and Galloway), and forms the border between England and Scotland for several miles before joining the Esk. Use of the "Water" affix for a lesser river is typical of the Scottish Borders, and elsewhere in Scotland, as well as the smaller burns.
