Etymology edit

Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰel- (to speak, yell, bark, roar, sound) (whence English bellow), or alternatively it may be linked to Proto-Indo-European *(s)pel- (to say aloud, recite) (compare Albanian fjalë, English spell, Armenian առասպել (aṙaspel)).
