Catalan edit
Etymology edit
Inherited from Vulgar Latin *eccum hīc, from Latin eccum + hīc ("this here"), the latter from hīc, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰi-ḱe (“this, here”).
Pronunciation edit
Adverb edit
aquí
Usage notes edit
- In the classic three-grade system, aquí is second grade and thus means “there”; in systems that make no distinction between the first and second grades, aquí supplants ací, thus taking on the additional meaning of “here”.
In Valencian systems, ahí rather than aquí is used for the second grade while aquí is used for the first grade alongside ací in various northern and southern dialects.
