From Late-Vietic *poːʔ, related to Chinese 父 (MC pjuX|bjuX) (SV: phụ) likely through a Tai language. Compare Proto-Tai *boːᴮ, whence Thai พ่อ (pɔ̂ɔ). Ultimately a nursery word.
