From Vulgar Latin *dunquam, a cross of Vulgar Latin dunc and Latin unquam (ever), with the former itself being a cross of Latin tunc (then) with dum (while). The final /-e/ may reflect an older form */ˈdonkwas/, with adverbial /-s/, for which cf. Middle French doncques.
