From Middle English ij appel, from Old English ēagæppel (eyeball, pupil), from Proto-West Germanic *augapl, equivalent to eye +‎ apple.

Cognate with West Frisian eachappel (pupil), Dutch oogappel (eyeball; pupil), German Augapfel (eyeball), Danish øjeæble (eyeball), Norwegian øyeeple (eyeball).
