From Middle English ij appel, from Old English ēagæppel (“eyeball, pupil”), from Proto-West Germanic *augapl, equivalent to eye + apple.
Cognate with West Frisian eachappel (“pupil”), Dutch oogappel (“eyeball; pupil”), German Augapfel (“eyeball”), Danish øjeæble (“eyeball”), Norwegian øyeeple (“eyeball”).
