From Proto-Celtic *swe- (“oneself”) (from Proto-Indo-European *swé) + *es (“he”) (in the singular) or *ens (“them”) (in the plural) + *sin (anaphoric pronoun). The initial f is from earlier *hw, the lenited form of the Proto-Celtic *sw.
