Recorded since at least the 1960s, where it occurs in Haldo Gibson's slang dictionary. Probably derived from flat (flat), alluding to an unwomanly body shape.

Usage notes edit

Flata has previously been a highly offensive slur towards homosexual women, but has been used by the gay rights movement as a self-descriptive term in order to reclaim and destigmatize it. See also bög.
