From Old Galician-Portuguese galĩeiro, from Latin gallīnārium (“henhouse”), from gallīna (“hen”). Cognate with Galician galiñeiro, Spanish gallinero, Catalan galliner and Italian gallinaio. By surface analysis, from galinha + -eiro.
