Etymology edit
From Proto-Finnic *hëpo, cognate with Estonian hobu, Karelian hepo/hebo, Veps hepo, Livonian ibbi, Votic õpo, Votic opo. Possibly a loan from a descendant of Proto-Indo-European *h₁éḱwos, such as Proto-Germanic *ehwaz.
