Onomatopoeic. Related to Russian хру́пать (xrúpatʹ), Russian хру́пкий (xrúpkij, frail, fragile), Bulgarian хру́пам (hrúpam), Polish chrupać, etc., all from Proto-Slavic *xrupati (to crunch, to munch).
