Etymology 1 edit
Used at least since 1685. From the verb hyssa, meaning to lift and swing somebody in the air, a variant of hissa. In the 1960s, the word got a renaissance when it was used by Astrid Lindgren to describe the pranks made by Emil i Lönneberga.
