Inherited from Proto-Slavic *kopьcь (“heap”), from *kopъ (see *kopa) + *-ьcь, akin to *kopati (“to dig”), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *kop-, probably from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kep- (“to strike, beat”).
